English theatre

TNT Theatre Britain presents:
Frankenstein

by Mary Shelley

adapted by Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith

directed by Paul Stebbings

Almost two weeks ago a group of pupils was in the Studio Buffo on art ‘’Frankenstein’’. It was performance in English so for us – students - it was pretty good lesson.

,,FRANKENSTEIN is one of the most potent modern myths. Too many stage versions and even films ignore that this story is not a novel but a myth that has grown out of Mary Shelley’s original; so this production combines Boris Karloff’s immense impact with that of the original story to create a fascinating and entertaining new work. It will explore that myth through a Gothic comedy that mixes popular entertainment with a serious exploration of the darker themes within the myth. ‘’

The spectacle was extremely hilarious and very good prepared. Only four artists was playing - you should know there were more roles to play, but it was not (surely) a problem. They were awesome ! Especially I do like doctor Frankenstein. He was really funny and he put in all his heart to this role .

In Studio Buffo there is no microphones – that means actors and actress have to say loudly and distinctly.  I was impressed cause even if performers was saying quietly, we heard all of words and sentences. Another way, when someone did not understand some phrases because of different reasons. For example, I have not understood not of all first words which had been saying by ‘’mad scientist’’ , who have not spoken distinctly.

It is amusing situation when you are watching English film or theatre. Why ? For the reason that with first words you do not focus on meaning of words, because you are waiting for translation. You just have to ‘’turn on English thinking’’.

It is quite curious and worthy initiative to go on English spectacle . You can check your knowledge and hear ‘’live’’ language.  It is also another side of theatre, which is waiting for discover…

The cast :
Mag Travers
as doctor Frankenstein's wife
Kieran Mortell
as doctor Frankenstein
Gareth Fordred
as Frankenstein's monster
George McLean
as doctor's helper

Love in the time of the apocalypse

We'll run far away and nothing will ever tear us apart.
Only you and me.

The history of our country is quite long. Polish people have been taking part in battles and wars for ages so we have had a lot of ups and downs. Life isn't easy and we could experiance it many times. Today we live in a free country and are an independent nation. Despite the fact that not everything here is as good as it should be, we need to remember about people who fought in order to make our motherland  autonomous. That's probably one of the reasons why our class was invited to watch a film called "City 44", the film, which I'd like to introduce.

"City 44" is a martial film with a romantic thread. It was released about a month ago and directed by Jan Komasa, an author of another popular with movie-goers film -"Sala samobójców". The starring roles are taken by unknown actors who, despite their lack of experiance, experiance every obstacles and play very well. It stars Józef Pawłowski (Stefan), Anna Próchniak (Kama) and Zofia Wachlewicz (Biedronka).

The film tells a story of a group of young people, who live in Warsaw in 1944. Their life is complicated, they have a lot of difficulties but they are able to confront them. The main character is Stefan who at the beginning of the story is just a casual boy who takes care of his mother and little brother. Suddently he loses his job and tries to find another one. Of course his friends sipport him and employ him in a mechanic's garage. They all work in plotting, so they are able to lose life for the country. It is said that two birds in a feather flock together and it seems true, because finally Stefan joins the secret group. A few days later insurgency begins and friends become insurgents. They have to stand face-to-face with the new reality. Everyday each of them can die which makes film more experesive. As I said at the beginnig, there is a romantic thread too. The main character has feelings for two girls being his friends. There is a kind of contention between Kama and Biedronka, because they both fell in love with Stefan. Which one would he choose? You need to see it on your own.

The film has been probably the biggest polish production ever and it's full if special effects. As a result in some scenes there is too much blood or violence. Anyway, I need to appreciate the scenery. It really lookes as if it was a devastated city. There were milions kilos of stones and sand transported to Warsaw, As for costumes, they were enjoyable too. You just had a feeling that every scene happened in real life, The soundtrack involved old song from 20's and some new ones which were made special for the film. They made this move even more beautiful.

To sum up, I would tell that I can throughly. recommend it for everyonr. It's moving, convincing and inspiring. Despite it's not a classical tearjerker, I'm sure it won't leave you indifferent to the war and young people's dedication. In my opinion, it is certainly worth taking a closer look.

Polish teen role models

We don’t have many teenage role models around us. In this age young people are very rebellious. But few of them are affable in contrast to their peers. In my opinnion a person who is inspiration for people is Jasiek Mela.

Jan Mela is polishboy who, as a double amputee, was the youngest person to reach the North Pole when He was 16 and eight months later the South Pole.

Jasiek was pleasant, cheerful teenager. He was always smile and happy. One day he had an accident. He was playing table tenis with friends when it suddenly started raining. He climbed up on an electrical transformer builing and he was electrocuted. After accident surgeons had to amputate his left chis and right forearm. But Jasiek hold your ground. Marek Kamiński helped him in work and train. Finally we reach two Poles and next three mountain tops – Kilimangaro, Elbrus and El Capitan. It’s amazing! Moreover he created the Foundation „Poza horyzonty”

I Admie Jasiek Mela because he is very determined and never back down. He had a big failure but he didn’t fall and surrender. He is a awesome fabulous person. Surely he is teen role model.

The role of school in our lives.

Does school prepare you for day-to-day challenges?

That's a good question. School suppose to prepare us for day-today challenges, but it doesn't. The most of the time in school we spend on learning things that we use in our future jobs. The knowledge about style in art can't really help me in day-to-day challenges. I wouldn't be changing anything in school curriculum because the most of challenges are very easy to overcome.

Does school prepare you for your future life?

School prepare us to future life. Most of us. General education give us nothing. We are not special in any specialization. The students who are studying biology and chemistry and if they are good they can become doctors, if they are good at it. Some people are very creative. They can make completely new product and make a millions and there not need to be used the knowledge learned in school. Maybe some of the school subjects can arouse interest. The student who don't know what to do became more and more interested in the subject. Then it became his passion and then it becomes his job. The role of school not relevant when students are lazy. They won't even show the interest in lesson. They won't acquire knowledge that teacher is trying to give them. Answering the question, school prepares us to our future life, because without education normal man can't find a job.

Super hero !

I think that each of us can say a few words about a person who could be called a super hero. For ones it will be somebody shown on TV, for others- a common neighbor who has done something small, but special for us. In my opinion, everybody who thinks more about the needs, happines of other people, than our own, deserves being called a hero.

I would like to present a story of Polish pilot who saved the lives of more than two hundred passengers. Tadeusz Wrona was born at 16th April 1954 in Żywiec. Airplanes were his whole life from an early age. He won worldwide fame after an emergency landing on Warsaw Chopin Airport.
1st November 2011 the captain, forced by plane breakdown,
did safely landing without opening chassies.
As a consequence, he saved all travelling people who didn't know what has happened to the end of flight. The day of 16 November has been recongised by The Council City of New York as Captain's Wrona Day.

I think that not everyone would act in such a responsible way like this man.
Tadeusz has got a lot of possitive features which helped him in this terrible situation, like: calm, courage, determination. He was aware that now he was responsible for tho hundred people's future.
I admire this captain for his singlemindedness. His attitude is worthy emulation.

Sokołów Podlaski- Neustadt exchange!

Our school has an exchange program with school in Neustadt, in Germany and three months ago, in June, our students went to visit this beautiful country.

Neustadt am Ruebenberge is a town in the districkt of Hannover. It's the 9th largest settlement in Germany by area, though only about 45,000 inhabitantslive there. We were able to visit this place and a lot more.

We went there by bus, our journey had to start at 5 a.m., because we had a lot of kilometers to cover this distance. We were at the place at 17 p.m. It was a long, tiring trip, so almost everybody in the bus were sleeping.

We stayed in our german peers houses. Even though it was a trip, we had to go with our german friends to their school and be at their classes. For many it was difficult to understand what is lesson about, but it was new experience for all of us. After the classes we always had trips to surrounding cities.

We were in Hannover, where we made a tour through the town. We saw a beutiful building of a town hall and royal gardens. We were amazed with architecture and scenery of this place.

TOWN HALL

ROYAL GARDENS "HERRENHAUSEN"

We were also in Bremen. There were more sightseeing, we went to the old square, we saw a statue "Four musicians of Bremen". We met with very unusual things for us like really tight streets that can hardly fit 3 persons, we tried their sweets and enjoyed the great weather in such special place.

FOUR MUSICIANS OF BREMEN

The biggest attraction for all was "Heide park Resort", a theme park in Soltau, near Hamburg, one of the biggest german amusement parks. It's full of rollercoasters driving 100 km/h.

One of the best attractions for us were:

"Colossos", a wooden roller coaster.

The wing coaster "Flight of the demons".

"Scream"- a 103 meters tall Drop Tower.

"Kraken"- dive-coaster, whose angle of the first bleed is 90°.

It was such an adrenaline! We were there whole day but we still didn't have enough time to try everything. It was one of the best thinghs we saw in our live. Other afternoons we spent together on tours through Neustadt or we had other trips to nearer places.

It was amazing advanture for all of us. We were able to experience the other culture, use foreign languages so they could understand us, see many beautiful places and make awesome friends. For sure this excursion will stay in our mind for long time.

Fabulous Italy !

Several students from our class were on a trip to Italy. It was at beginning of June. We spent there almost two weeks. Everyone had a good time and nobody – I think – regrets.

All journey started from long and exhausted drive by bus. It was – without lies – horrible to sit on the one chair for above twenty hours.  But we survived this really bravely :D.

I was afraid of our communication in the hotel firstly but it turned out I didn’t have to. Whole hotel was provide by Polish people. Happily.

Almost every day we spent our days on the beach 200 m away from our house, so if you forget about something, you can come back fast. It was really funny when we saw our beach – it was word for word about 100 m². Everywhere were sunbeds which were booked for customers other exclusive hotels. Our seaside was just public but it didn’t stand on way to good fun.

One day we were in ancient city Rome and in Vatican. We had beautiful weather so our walk was safe and sound. This trip took us all day – from 4 am to 10 pm. But it was worthy experience.  Our guide had originally humor and very fast gait. Sometimes we just didn’t keep up for him. Guide told us in short the most important things we should know. He didn’t bored us. I liked it.

Other day we were in San Marino – small country 30 km away from our city San Mauro Mare. It was awesome medieval place. It was built with rocks which gave incredible atmosphere very old and cozy city. We laughed when some people there said to us ,,dzień dobry’’ or ,,cześć’’ and they didn’t know any words more in Polish. It was cute. San Marino was… no - is mysterious but really nice.

Finally it was time to pack our things and leave this lovely town. Nobody knows when this time have lost but everybody knows it was fantastic time !

A poem on happiness

Where the sun hides behind the horizon slowly,

Where stars fall down hastily to the earth,

There in bushes lies in wait snow-white owl,

Which because of her night gig forgot about stage fright,

Where the blue sky smiles in the morning

Where the silver moon sent his brightness,

There bigger than another tree is standing

And a squirrel hid in his branches.

Where the colourful rainbow rises above everything

Where modest rain sheds his tears,

There trumpets' hum announces a warning

The huge herd of big elephants draws near

Where the salmon swims to the top of the river,

Where red tiger warm himself in sun,

There four-leaf clovers have grown up for a year

And above them birds' singing resounds

Where is this place? Do you know what it means?

It's not far away, because,

If you'd like got carried away by your dreams

Your eyes just have to be closed.

An essay on happiness

Everyone wants to be happy in their life. For some people it’s enough to spend their free time with a group of friends and family. They need to talk to them without any pressure, whereas other ones set ambitious goals and they’d like to achieve success. However it’s generally thought that human life is full of problems and disasters which make us sad. Every day we get new experiences that can be good or bad. Furthermore, we live in 21st century, money make our world go round and there are a lot of technology and modern gadgets. Consequently, we forget about our feelings and necessities. We want to be strong and equal to life’s requirement, even though we’re not ready for this. During the pursuit of fame or money it’s really hard to relax and take a breath. Is it possible to be happy in this cruel world? Is it easy? These are the questions which I’d like to consider.

It’s hard to deny that today we haven’t got as much free time as a few years ago. Students have been learning for hours and they find out new information. In other words, they are too busy to do something for themselves. The adults are in similar situations, because they try to earn enough money for their family. They work so hard but the employers usually pay peanuts. They are absolutely exhausted and they are not able to fulfill their obligations. They forget about health and as a result they fall ill or become depressed. It’s easy to conclude that they certainly aren’t happy. What is more people who look as if they manage to live in this modern world often have nasty habits. When they achieve success, they want to get more and more. Consequently they lose family and friends. They don’t understand that the love of money is the root of all evil. When they finally see their mistakes it’s too late. While they are going to be happy, they become victim of their ambitions. I’m sure they’re not satisfied with their life.

On the other hand, the world is certainly  beautiful. You just have to stop for a while to look around to notice absolutely gorgeous nature, hear the bird’s singing and smell the flowers’ scent. It true that today world is still on the run and everything is changing. We need to be ready for these changes but we’re not alone. There are a lot of helpful people around us who can give us a hand in each, even the worst situations. Apart from that we have to find out what is really important for us and worry only about it. You can set an aim and then fulfill it. You will feel proud of yourself and it means happiness. Try to make your dreams come true and you won’t regret it. Your dreams will give you a power to fight with bad fortune. It’s not expensive or difficult, just find a quiet place and let your dreams carry you away. It’s your fabulous world and no one can take it away. There you may relax and come up with new ideas. Life is great and you have to discover it!

To sum up, I must confirm that life in this world can be fine. While we are fulfilling our goals we feel pleased and excited. When we visit our favourite places we are relieved and laid-back. Although we often have arguments with our relatives and friends, we need to remember that blood is thicker than water so we can always rely on them. It’s sometimes hard to achieve our aims and it demands a lot of work but this effort will certainly bring many benefits. We should remember that despite the fact that we’re still in a hurry it’s worth a while to stop and think about our necessities. Try to recall good experiences which you have got recently and you’d like to repeat them. And don’t  worry if you can’t remember any of this kind of situations. Close your eyes and think about places which you like, see the people who are important for you. Your dreams will certainly raise a smile on your face. Don’t wait, just do it!

First year : summary

We started from elementary things that means from present tenses.  But I think nobody regrets. Everyone had a chance to recall this simple but very important grammar.

On English did everything -  we were speaking, writing and first of all we were learning. It was something like education by fun. Thanks to work in pairs we could get to know views of each other.
From time to time, at the subjects there were projects. We made one about a capsule time. This presentation included what we will put in here. It was curious and comic homework because of stuff hidden there.

Usually our units were finished by tests and some kind of essays. Of course between units appeared  (sometimes surprising) small tests.
To sum up, I think it was worthy year. A year with part of knowledge, work and fun.  I hope the next class will be as good as previous.
